Placements

The Hospital Placement in Barcelona program offers an intensive and immersive clinical observation experience hosted across a range of partner hospitals in Barcelona. Over four weeks, students gain exposure to diverse healthcare environments through observational shadowing experiences, combined with cultural excursions and local activities integrated throughout the program.

While English is the second language for many local hospital staff and proficiency levels may vary, students are fully supported throughout the program. A dedicated Site Director, fluent in both English and the local language, is based on-site to assist with communication, coordination, and student support during the placement experience.

Program Structure:

The program follows a structured weekly schedule designed to balance clinical immersion with cultural exploration. Students typically rotate through a variety of specialised departments throughout the placement, with preferences considered where possible (specific rotations cannot be guaranteed). The clinical week is structured as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday: Students engage in a minimum of 5 hours daily shadowing leaving the late afternoon / evenings for reflection and cultural activities.
  • Friday – Sunday: One group excursion is scheduled per week (typically on Fridays), with weekends reserved for free time.

Sample Rotation Schedule:

Week 1: Cardiology, General Surgery, or Orthopedics
Week 2: Radiology, Emergency Medicine, or General Surgery
Week 3: Ophthalmology, Cardiology, or Nuclear Radiology
Week 4: Dermatology, Pediatrics, or OB/GYN

*The above is a guide only and varies between hospitals*

Note: Hospital placement programs require a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 CISaustralia participants. In the event that the minimum enrollment is not reached, flexible solutions will be considered, for example applicants may transfer their application to an alternative European hospital placement program or defer participation to a subsequent program date. CISaustralia Program Advisors can provide complete details on these options.

Academic Credit

The four-week CISaustralia Hospital Placement in Barcelona program is academically structured to be equivalent to one full-time university course and includes a minimum of 80 hours of AAMC-compliant, observational-only clinical shadowing.

This structure makes the program suitable for medical, pre-med and health related students seeking academic credit or placement hours toward their Australian degree requirements for related hospital placements. Approval of academic credit is determined solely by the student’s Australian home university, faculty, or school.

Students intending to access OS-HELP, the Australian Government student funding mechanism, must obtain academic credit pre-approval from their university prior to departure. CISaustralia can provide supporting documentation, including placement offer and acceptance materials, to assist students with the OS-HELP application process.

Academic Requirement: Students must be enrolled at an Australian university and be in good academic standing with a GPA of 4.0 (out of 7) or equivalent. Students who do not meet the GPA requirement are encouraged to contact a CISaustralia Program Advisor to discuss alternative options and supporting documentation.

On-site support

The Hospital Placement in Barcelona program is built upon a high-support model to ensure a seamless and enriching experience. During your intensive clinical immersion, a dedicated on-site support staff member (Site Director) will be present at the hospital throughout the placement period. While students are always encouraged to use their initiative and problem solve (as part of their overall growth and soft skill development) the on site support staff are the link between the student and the medical professionals, offering communication assistance ( in both English and the local language), as well as day-to-day placement support.

The value of this local presence cannot be overstated. On-site staff are your primary resource for all aspects of the program, including general program questions, local cultural insights, and city/country specific advice etc. This comprehensive, on-the-ground support is available 24/7, providing peace of mind and allowing you to focus completely on maximising your hospital clinical experience in Barcelona.

Excursions

CISaustralia staff in Barcelona coordinate a range of excursions and cultural activities designed to help students experience the best of the city and surrounding regions. These activities also provide a great opportunity to connect with fellow students while gaining a deeper understanding of Catalan culture, history, and daily life. Full excursion details will be provided during program orientation.
