Insurance Requirements

When preparing to travel abroad, it is essential to ensure that you are prepared for any problems that may occur. Part of this is making sure that you will be able to receive adequate medical/health and emergency care if the situation arises.

It is a requirement of CISaustralia that ALL program participants purchase and show proof of medical and/or health insurance prior to their departure from Australia. Insurance policies must provide sufficient cover for the duration of a participant’s selected program.

CISaustralia highly recommends insurance policies that cover for the following minimums:

  • $100,000 minimum for emergency evacuation
  • $200,000 minimum for any type of medical needs
  • $20,000 minimum for repatriation
  • Health insurance that includes coverage for COVID-related illness

If a participant provides CISaustralia with proof of insurance coverage that falls below the recommended minimums as outlined above, the participant may be asked to sign the CISaustralia insurance waiver. Participants who do not provide proof of insurance prior to departure will be excluded from their selected program.

CISaustralia strongly recommends that you arrange comprehensive insurance for the entire duration of your program, including any pre- or post-program travel.

In many cases your home university may provide overseas medical/health insurance to students. If this is the case please check coverage dates, obtain policy details and 24-hour emergency contact details from the insurance provider. Please provide all details to CISaustralia via your Portal.

Additional or supplementary comprehensive insurance can be purchased separately and, in most cases, can be arranged in conjunction with your flight bookings. Please note that medical/health insurance provided by a student’s home university or CISaustralia may not include ‘travel’ insurance, e.g.: lost luggage. All participants should review their medical and travel insurance, be aware of excess payments related to claims, understand exclusions and ensure a policy meets their own requirements.

It is required for all participants to read the CISaustralia – Insurance Guide for Travel prior to program departure.
