Intern in Spain

Ever dream of working in a travel agency, at a magazine or investment business… in Spain? You can spend 6, 8 or 12 weeks in beautiful Barcelona working in a company (English and / or Spanish – depending on your levels of Spanish) while soaking up the city’s wonders. Sounds like the ideal way to gain international work experience, live abroad and experience one of the coolest cities in Europe.

Program Overview

Barcelona is one of Western Europe’s most vibrant business and cultural hubs. It is a fantastic destination to enjoy one of our customised internships.

It’s the best of both worlds. You get a career-based experience in your chosen field to boost your professional development, plus you get to sample life in Barcelona – the culture, people, scenic beauty and of course the nightlife in a city that never sleeps.

Our internships start at 6 weeks but we encourage you to stay as long as possible to truly enjoy the benefits, both professionally and culturally.

COVID Safe Travel

The health and safety of our students is our highest priority. We take our duty of care for our students, their families and our Australian University partners seriously. For all of our program locations, we have developed a site-specific COVID-19 risk matrix and risk management and emergency response plans so that health and safety response protocols are monitored, managed and communicated.

We have also developed a flexible COVID-19 Refund Policy that limits the financial impact on students should CISaustralia (or one of our overseas partners) have to cancel or suspend a program due to COVID-19.

In preparation for your overseas program, it’s important that you carefully read and understand information related to COVID-19 Travel Safety and Insurance Requirements.

CISaustralia monitors Smartraveller and reliable news feeds to keep up to date with the latest COVID information and any associated travel restrictions and entry requirements for all destinations where we have programs. Due to the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation, Government travel advice can change quickly. For the most up to date information on Spain, visit the Smartraveller website.

Barcelona is an international hub in areas of commerce, politics and business, plus a wide range of other industries. When partnered with a Spanish business or organisation, you will participate in the daily activities of that business, working on specific projects and tasks designed to give you invaluable experience in your area of interest.

We encourage our interns to stay as long as possible to get the most out of the experience. The longer you stay, the more proficient you will be in the language and the more you will be able to sample the culture. No matter your level of Spanish, the internship program is available to all. But if your language skills are intermediate to advanced, there will be more options and placements available. Every intern is also provided with 20 hours of Spanish language classes during the program.

Get out and about! Living in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities, there is plenty to see and do once your day’s work is complete. We will have a range of trips available, both in Barcelona and to other regions in Spain.

Take in a Flamenco show, or sample a Catalan cooking class. There are also festivals and local attractions to enjoy. Travel further afield by visiting Madrid, Costa Bravo or why not even Morocco. Barcelona is your gateway to explore this magnificent region of the world.

When it comes to business, culture and location, few places can match Barcelona.

How’s this for a location – Barcelona is on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula and on the shores of the stunning Mediterranean. With a population of 1.5 million, it is Spain’s second largest city and one of the central hubs for business in Europe.

If you include the outer lying areas surrounding Barcelona, the population expands to almost 5 million, adding to the diversity of the city and its people. Without making the language issue too difficult, there are two languages spoken in Barcelona: Castilian Spanish and Catalan, which is more widely spoken.

One of the great things about spending your internship in Barcelona is the weather. If you love being outdoors, then Barcelona is perfect. Enjoy the wonderful sites and attractions of Barcelona all year round. A fantastic public transport system makes taking in all the great places and sites Barcelona has to offer very simple and time effective.

As an intern, you will find yourself immersed in a mix of cultures with an international flavour of nationalities. Barcelona’s Catalan culture is one to savour and enjoy.

There are two main types of accommodation for your stay in Barcelona:

  • You can stay with other interns in shared accommodation, or
  • You can stay with a Spanish family to truly take your experience to a whole new level

Please note: Residence halls may also be on option, pending availability.

The fully furnished apartments are centrally located in the city of Barcelona, giving you great access to cafés, restaurants and nightlife of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Public transportation is close by, allowing a short commute to your internship placement. Interns will likely share a bedroom with another intern or student on the program with a total of 3-6 interns/students per apartment. Each apartment is fully furnished and has a shared living room, bathroom and well-equipped kitchen.

If you choose a homestay, get ready for a truly wonderful Spanish cultural experience and complete immersion with the language. You will likely share a fully furnished room with another student or intern, with a shared bathroom. There is also access to a communal living area. Your host family will provide you with linen, as well as breakfast and dinner.

Staying with a host family is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the Spanish culture and deliver the best possible Barcelona experience. If you are considering a homestay, please keep in mind that you may be placed with a young professional or an older single or couple. It will not necessarily be in a traditional family environment.

Please note that bed linens and towels will be provided for students at both homestays and apartment accommodation.

Please note: Students are liable to pay for any damages that occur to the accommodation. Replacing lost/stolen/damaged room keys and/or other damages that happen onsite will be charged directly to the student (in local currency).

Academic Credit

An added bonus to your CISaustralia internship is that many universities in Australia will recognise your internship and grant you academic credit. Many progressive universities recognise high-quality internships as part of an elective course, a practical experience element of your degree studies and/or a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course.

If you are interested in gaining academic credit for your internship towards your degree at your university in Australia, you should apply for pre-approved academic credit at your home university. Contact your International Office, Academic Advisor/Head of Department or Careers Office to see if this option is available.

CISaustralia will work with you, your university’s Careers Office and academic staff within your faculty to try and secure academic credit for this program towards your degree.

CISaustralia can provide a certificate of participation for every placement. Please contact us for more information.

1. Is a passport or visa required? How and when do I apply for my passport and visa?

It is a requirement of entry to any international destination to have a valid passport. It is important to remember that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months PAST your return date. To apply for a passport visit Australia Post to collect an application or learn more at:

Passport application forms can be filled in and printed online, but not lodged. You will need to sign the completed application form in black ink and lodge it at the time of your personal interview, together with all of the supporting documentation listed on the application form. In Australia most forms are lodged at Australia Post outlets.

Visas are specific to the destination, please check with trained counselling staff at CISaustralia for further information.

2. Where will I be staying during my internship?

Accommodation is provided as part of your internship. This is often shared accommodation or a single room in a shared apartment. Please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab of the internship you are interested in to learn more.

3. Will there be other students with me in the program, and if so, how many?

CISaustralia programs are a great way to not only meet local and international students but also others from Australia on a similar intern journey as you. We often have U.S. students on intern placements through our partners in the United States. Depending on the year, intern program sizes will vary. Often flexibility is the key! If you need more information on specific program sizes, please contact us.

4. Will I be paid during my internship?

You won’t get paid but the experience is priceless. Your resume will look outstanding and you will open up a whole new world of opportunities. Professional internships are invaluable experiences, and educational and resume-building programs that will greatly enhance your employment prospects when you return home. Some universities will also offer academic credit for your internship. Check with your home university in Australia.

5. How do you match me with businesses and organisations?

Matching you to the best available internship is crucial to the success of the program. We take a detailed look at your interests, goals and skills and match you accordingly with businesses and organisations that fit your needs. This is why the application process is so crucial. Here you will nominate your top two areas of interest and we will also conduct an interview with you through our Program Coordinator or on-site team to help us achieve the best placement. Once you have paid your internship deposit, our team will move ahead with placing you with the best match in one of your two chosen fields of interest.

6. I am thinking of an internship in my major – is this possible?

It is possible and wherever possible, we go even further to individualise your placement to truly match your major. For sample placements take a look at the ‘Placements’ tab.

7. Is the internship matching deposit necessary?

It is necessary for one very important reason. It shows your commitment to the program, not just to us but also potential businesses and organisations that we are approaching on your behalf. When you’ve paid the deposit we can confidently approach these businesses on your behalf to find the best possible match. It is not an extra fee – the internship deposit is part of your overall program payment.
