Intern in Singapore

Expand your personal and professional horizons in vibrant Singapore for 6-12 weeks! Get to know what it’s like to work in this exciting region of Asia via a customised professional internship, exceptional support and cultural engagements.

Program Overview

Though physically small, Singapore is an economic giant. The place name “Singapore” is derived from Singa-pura (“City of the Lion”), a commonly used term since the fourteenth century. The main cultural traditions are Malay, Indian, Chinese, and to some extent Western (British). The different communities do not regard themselves as sharing a culture; instead, they consider themselves parts of a whole.

Singapore offers a unique environment for interns to gain a valuable international experience. CISaustralia allows you to expand your future horizons by securing a professional internship placement complete with around-the-clock assistance. We know the value of having global experiences on your CV, which is why we’re dedicated to making sure your experience is a positive one, full of growth and exciting development. This is all about getting world-class career experience in a major global marketplace!

During your customised internship placement, you will have access to:

One of the best aspects of international work experience is the balance of adventure, discovery and development. Your CISaustralia experience comes complete with an orientation, city tour and cultural activities so that you can get to know the other interns on your program, the area where you will be working and how to get around. COVID Safe Travel

The health and safety of our students is our highest priority. We take our duty of care for our students, their families and our Australian University partners seriously. For all of our program locations, we have developed a site-specific COVID-19 risk matrix and risk management and emergency response plans so that health and safety response protocols are monitored, managed and communicated.

We have also developed a flexible COVID-19 Refund Policy that limits the financial impact on students should CISaustralia (or one of our overseas partners) have to cancel or suspend a program due to COVID-19.

In preparation for your overseas program, it’s important that you carefully read and understand information related to COVID-19 Travel Safety and Insurance Requirements.

CISaustralia monitors Smartraveller and reliable news feeds to keep up to date with the latest COVID information and any associated travel restrictions and entry requirements for all destinations where we have programs. Due to the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation, Government travel advice can change quickly. For the most up to date information, visit the Smartraveller website for Singapore.

Location

Singapore has been described as a nation where “East meets West”, “Gateway to Asia” and a “Garden city”. The country is working towards its “City in a Garden” dream and becoming more and more sustainable.

Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore’s excellent infrastructure enables visitors to enjoy its many sites and attractions in a safe, clean and green environment. Its combination of Western-style development and Eastern-style calm seems to present the best of both hemispheres. It’s a modern metropolis where you feel safe walking the streets, and it’s an Asian business center that’s a model of efficiency.

The country is made up of Chinese (76%), Malay (15%) and Indian (6%) cultures. Each group works hard to maintain its cultural traditions while building a modern, harmonious and cohesive society. The country has four official languages: Mandarin Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English. English is the most widespread language and is spoken by almost everyone.

Singapore has one of the highest economic freedom scores in the world. It is ranked 1st among 39 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages. Its highly developed free-market economy owes its success in large part to its remarkably open and corruption-free business environment, prudent monetary and fiscal policies, and a transparent legal framework.

Accommodation

Students in this program will be accommodated in a safe and centrally located 3-4 star hotel (twin room) – two students to a room. Rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with two single beds, ensuite bathroom, TV, safe, mini-fridge, desk and closet.

Hotel amenities include a welcome lobby, reception desk, lifts, a small air-conditioned gym, pool, free high-speed Wi-Fi, complimentary bottled water on arrival, tea making facilities and weekly cleaning. There is a cafe on site, money changer and coin operated laundry.

Part of the Singapore experience is also to immerse into local food culture. While cooking facilities are not included in hotel rooms, an extensive range of eating facilities are located within a short walking distance, including restaurants, food courts and late night street hawkers. Good quality local meals can be purchased for $SGD 7-12.

Academic Credit

An added bonus to your CISaustralia internship is that many universities in Australia will recognise your internship and grant you academic credit. Many progressive universities recognise high-quality internships as part of an elective course, a practical experience element of your degree studies and/or a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course.

If you are interested in gaining academic credit for your internship towards your degree at your university in Australia, you should apply for pre-approved academic credit at your home university. Contact your International Office, Academic Advisor/Head of Department or Careers Office to see if this option is available.

CISaustralia will work with you, your university’s Careers Office and academic staff within your faculty to try and secure academic credit for this program towards your degree.

CISaustralia can provide a certificate of participation for every placement. Please contact us for more information.

FAQs

1. Is a passport or visa required? How and when do I apply for my passport and visa?

It is a requirement of entry to any international destination to have a valid passport. It is important to remember that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months PAST your return date. To apply for a passport visit Australia Post to collect an application or learn more at: www.passports.gov.au

Passport application forms can be filled in and printed online, but not lodged. You will need to sign the completed application form in black ink and lodge it at the time of your personal interview, together with all of the supporting documentation listed on the application form. In Australia most forms are lodged at Australia Post outlets.

Visas are specific to the destination, please check with trained counselling staff at CISaustralia for further information.

2. Where will I be staying during my internship?

Accommodation is provided as part of your internship. This is often shared accommodation or a single room in a shared apartment. Please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab of the internship you are interested in to learn more.

3. Will there be other students with me in the program, and if so, how many?

CISaustralia programs are a great way to not only meet local and international students but also others from Australia on a similar intern journey as you. We often have U.S. students on intern placements through our partners in the United States. Depending on the year, intern program sizes will vary. Often flexibility is the key! If you need more information on specific program sizes, please contact us.

4. Will I be paid during my internship?

You won’t get paid but the experience is priceless. Your resume will look outstanding and you will open up a whole new world of opportunities. Professional internships are invaluable experiences, and educational and resume-building programs that will greatly enhance your employment prospects when you return home. Some universities will also offer academic credit for your internship. Check with your home university in Australia.

5. How do you match me with businesses and organisations?

Matching you to the best available internship is crucial to the success of the program. We take a detailed look at your interests, goals and skills and match you accordingly with businesses and organisations that fit your needs. This is why the application process is so crucial. Here you will nominate your top two areas of interest and we will also conduct an interview with you through our Program Coordinator or on-site team to help us achieve the best placement. Once you have paid your internship deposit, our team will move ahead with placing you with the best match in one of your two chosen fields of interest.

6. I am thinking of an internship in my major – is this possible?

It is possible and wherever possible, we go even further to individualise your placement to truly match your major. For sample placements take a look at the ‘Placements’ tab.

7. Is the internship matching deposit necessary?

It is necessary for one very important reason. It shows your commitment to the program, not just to us but also potential businesses and organisations that we are approaching on your behalf. When you’ve paid the deposit we can confidently approach these businesses on your behalf to find the best possible match. It is not an extra fee – the internship deposit is part of your overall program payment.
