London itself is one of the world’s great cities with easy access to countless museums, attractions and sites. Below are a few of the many places you might like to visit during your free time.

In London:

Buckingham Palace
The Queen’s famous London residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch is the setting for the pageantry of the Changing of the Guard, a London tradition that attracts large crowds.

Houses of Parliament
The heart of British politics is seated in the Houses of Parliament, situated in the Palace of Westminster right next to the River Thames. With more than 1,100 rooms and 100 staircases, the British Parliament is certainly extravagant and well worth a visit.

Big Ben
The name actually refers to one of the five bells that hang at the top of the famous clock tower, named Elizabeth Tower. The buildings adjoining the tower form the seat of the British Parliament: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

London Eye
The massive ferris wheel takes visitors on a 30-minute ride offering unparalleled aerial views of the city.

British Museum
One of London’s great wonders and truly a museum of the world. Within one day, you can explore the history and culture of all the world’s great civilisations. Free entry and free 30-minute guided tours are offered throughout the day.

English Premier League
If you don’t already support a team, you will probably need to choose one! Football (soccer) is regularly the topic of conversation throughout the UK. The greater London area is home to Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Fulham football clubs. If you can get tickets, why not attend a live match, or it’s always fun watching in a pub with lively fans!

In addition, you can find many interesting city tours:

  • London bus tour
  • Jack the Ripper Walking Tour
  • Introduction to Camden Market with an optional pub lunch and Hidden Pubs of London Walking Tour
  • Tour of the Benjamin Franklin House
  • Kings, Queens, Politics and Power Walking tour which starts in New Scotland Yard

In the UK:

Visit this picturesque city located on the River Cam and home to the prestigious University of Cambridge, founded in the 13th century. University colleges worth a visit include King’s, famed for its chapel and choir; Trinity, founded by Henry VIII; and St. John’s, with its fortified Great Gate.

Tour the ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’ and historic University town which is filled with buildings from every architectural period since the Saxons. Enjoy shopping, theatres, beautiful gardens, parks, cathedrals and museums.

Stonehenge is a must-see when in England. Explore the incredible stone formations which have become one of the world’s most recognisable sites.

Sample some of the area’s best modern restaurants and wine bars. Liverpool’s art galleries and museums are a great place to find out all about the city’s impressive musical, sport (come on ‘The Reds’! LFC) and maritime history, not to mention the city was the birthplace of The Beatles in 1960.

Windsor Castle
Visit the Queen’s official residence. This majestic castle will take your breath away.

In Europe:
Try a weekend trip to Europe or plan some extensive travel after your program is complete. With trains, buses and budget airlines so common in Europe, it is easy and affordable to get almost anywhere from London. Within a few hours, you can find yourself in Dublin, Edinburgh, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Rome, Brussels, Prague, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and more!

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” – Samuel Johnson

London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. With an estimated 8.7 million residents, London is the most populous region, urban zone and metropolitan area in the United Kingdom, and the third most populous city in Europe. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans who named it Londinium.

The London Underground (subway) makes navigating this big city easy and manageable. It is the oldest underground railway in the world, and combined with London’s train and bus systems, it makes everything accessible in minutes.

While enjoying your CISaustralia internship in London, you will live right in the hub of the action – central London.

In most cases you will share a bedroom with another international student. The accommodation usually includes a range of great facilities available for your free daily use. These may include:

  • A gymnasium and exercise classes
  • Laundry
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Shared kitchen
  • Linen changed weekly
  • And if you’re lucky a swimming pool/Jacuzzi/steam and sauna room

This is the perfect way to meet new friends from around the world while truly immersing yourself in the excitement and culture of London.

NOTE: Accommodation in London is in high demand and prices fluctuate regularly. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live. Landlords often increase rental property fees at late notice and availability can change suddenly. Students should be aware that there may be a supplementary housing fee of up to (but no more than) A$500 across the entire length of your stay in the program. If the additional accommodation fee of up to A$500 is required, it will be confirmed prior to your program departure date. We prefer to house internship students in zone 1 to reduce travel costs and limit commute times – pending the internship placement company.

Academic Credit

An added bonus to your CISaustralia internship is that many universities in Australia will recognise your internship and grant you academic credit. Many progressive universities recognise high-quality internships as part of an elective course, a practical experience element of your degree studies and/or a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course.

If you are interested in gaining academic credit for your internship towards your degree at your university in Australia, you should apply for pre-approved academic credit at your home university. Contact your International Office, Academic Advisor/Head of Department or Careers Office to see if this option is available.

CISaustralia will work with you, your university’s Careers Office and academic staff within your faculty to try and secure academic credit for this program towards your degree.

CISaustralia can provide a certificate of participation for every placement. Please contact us for more information.

1. Is a passport or visa required? How and when do I apply for my passport and visa?

It is a requirement of entry to any international destination to have a valid passport. It is important to remember that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months PAST your return date. To apply for a passport visit Australia Post to collect an application or learn more at:

Passport application forms can be filled in and printed online, but not lodged. You will need to sign the completed application form in black ink and lodge it at the time of your personal interview, together with all of the supporting documentation listed on the application form. In Australia most forms are lodged at Australia Post outlets.

Visas are specific to the destination, please check with trained counselling staff at CISaustralia for further information.

2. Where will I be staying during my internship?

Accommodation is provided as part of your internship. This is often shared accommodation or a single room in a shared apartment. Please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab of the internship you are interested in to learn more.

3. Will there be other students with me in the program, and if so, how many?

CISaustralia programs are a great way to not only meet local and international students but also others from Australia on a similar intern journey as you. We often have U.S. students on intern placements through our partners in the United States. Depending on the year, intern program sizes will vary. Often flexibility is the key! If you need more information on specific program sizes, please contact us.

4. Will I be paid during my internship?

You won’t get paid but the experience is priceless. Your resume will look outstanding and you will open up a whole new world of opportunities. Professional internships are invaluable experiences, and educational and resume-building programs that will greatly enhance your employment prospects when you return home. Some universities will also offer academic credit for your internship. Check with your home university in Australia.

5. How do you match me with businesses and organisations?

Matching you to the best available internship is crucial to the success of the program. We take a detailed look at your interests, goals and skills and match you accordingly with businesses and organisations that fit your needs. This is why the application process is so crucial. Here you will nominate your top two areas of interest and we will also conduct an interview with you through our Program Coordinator or on-site team to help us achieve the best placement. Once you have paid the $750 ($1,100 Intern in England) internship deposit, our team will move ahead with placing you with the best match in one of your two chosen fields of interest.

6. I am thinking of an internship in my major – is this possible?

It is possible and wherever possible, we go even further to individualise your placement to truly match your major. For sample placements take a look at the ‘Placements’ tab.

7. Is the internship matching deposit necessary?

It is necessary for one very important reason. It shows your commitment to the program, not just to us but also potential businesses and organisations that we are approaching on your behalf. When you’ve paid the deposit we can confidently approach these businesses on your behalf to find the best possible match. It is not an extra fee – the $750 ($1,100 Intern in England) deposit is part of your overall program payment.
